Payment overview
Understanding Katura's payment system.
Overview
Katura processes payments through Stripe, the world's most popular payment platform. Stripe handles credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and many other payment methods β all with PCI Level 1 compliance so you never touch sensitive card data.
How payments work
- Customer adds items to cart and proceeds to checkout
- Katura creates a Stripe PaymentIntent for the order total
- Customer enters payment details in Stripe's secure payment form
- Stripe processes the payment and notifies Katura
- Order status updates to "Paid" and you receive the funds
Tip
Stripe typically deposits funds to your bank account within 2 business days. You can track all payouts in your Stripe dashboard.
SaaS platform payments (Stripe Connect)
If you're using Katura as a SaaS platform, payments are routed through Stripe Connect. This means:
- Each tenant (store) has their own connected Stripe account
- Customers pay the tenant directly β not through Katura
- Katura can take a platform fee on each transaction
- Tenants manage their own payouts via the Stripe dashboard
Supported payment methods
- All major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover)
- Apple Pay and Google Pay (via Stripe Payment Element)
- Bank transfers (where supported by Stripe)
- Additional methods configurable in your Stripe dashboard
Deposits, layaway & payment plans
Custom and bespoke jewelry rarely settles in one transaction. Katura supports three payment models out of the box:
| Model | How it works | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit + balance | Customer pays a configurable % up front (typically 30β50%); balance charged when piece ships | Custom design, engagement rings |
| Layaway | Equal installments over a fixed schedule; piece released on final payment | Mid-priced retail purchases |
| Stripe Payment Plans | Stripe-native installment splits via the Payment Element | Eligible US customers, $50β$30k |
See Checkout for how deposits flow through the cart and Ordersfor how the balance gets attached to the order record.
Multi-currency
Stripe supports 135+ currencies. Katura can accept payment in any currency Stripe supports while settling to your account in your home currency. Pricing displays in the customer's currency based on geo-IP, with a manual override in the storefront header.
For multi-store setups (US + EU + UK), use a separate Stripe account per region β wired to the same Katura tenant. Funds settle locally; reporting consolidates in the admin.
PCI scope
Katura is a SAQ A environment β the lightest PCI compliance tier. Card data never touches our servers; the Stripe Payment Element renders inside an iframe served by Stripe directly. We see only a token (pi_xxx) that represents the payment intent. This is the same compliance posture as Shopify Payments, BigCommerce, and most modern checkout systems.
Refunds & disputes
- Refund from any settled order at
/admin/orders/[id]β full or partial, with a refund reason that's logged for the audit trail. - Disputes (chargebacks) appear at
/admin/payments/disputeswith the deadline to respond, the reason code, and a guided evidence collector. - Refund window β Stripe allows refunds up to 180 days after the original charge. Past that, you have to issue a manual ACH credit or store credit.
