Team overview

Managing your team with Katura.

Overview

Katura is the only jewelry platform with built-in payroll, HR, and team operations. From the moment a sales associate is hired to the moment they cash their last commission check, every interaction lives in one system β€” wired into the same database as your products, orders, and customers. No CSV exports, no monthly Gusto reconciliation, no β€œwait, did that commission get paid?”

Tip

Katura's Team & Payroll module replaces Gusto, ADP, Homebase, When I Work, BambooHR, and most of what an outsourced HR provider does for a 5–50 person retail studio. Cancel the stack β€” it's all in here.

Why this matters for jewelers specifically

Jewelry retail has commission structures more complex than most industries. A single sale might split commission three ways β€” opening associate, closing associate, and bench jeweler who built it. Tiers shift based on margin, on whether a piece is custom vs. catalog, and on whether the piece sold above or below MSRP. Trying to express that in a generic payroll tool is painful.

Because Katura sees every order line, who created it, who closed it, and what the cost basis was, it can apply your commission rules deterministically the moment payment lands. The number that hits payroll is the number you agreed on, with a per-line audit trail anyone can replay.

Feature deep-dive

  • Payroll runs β€” biweekly, semimonthly, monthly. US federal/state/local tax tables, FICA, FUTA/SUTA, plus configurable per-state UI rates. Direct deposit via ACH; printed checks for those who still need them.
  • Multi-entity β€” run payroll for multiple legal entities under one parent (useful when a retail studio also operates a wholesale arm or a separate LLC for the bench shop).
  • Commission tracking β€” flat, tiered, product-based, and split rules. Calculated on settled orders only β€” no clawback chaos when an order refunds, because commission attaches to the line, not the order.
  • Time clock β€” punch in/out from the admin, an iPad kiosk, or the iOS app. Optional GPS verification for in-store staff. Overtime is calculated per state rules.
  • PTO β€” accrual-based or fixed-bucket. Multiple PTO types (vacation, sick, personal, bereavement). Approval workflow with manager notifications.
  • Onboarding β€” document-signing flow for offer letters, NDAs, and tax forms. Training checklists by role.
  • Contractor & 1099 β€” separate ledger for contractor payments. Year-end 1099-NEC generation with W-9 collection.
  • Self-service β€” every team member can view pay stubs, W-2s, PTO balance, and update their direct-deposit info from /admin/me.

Audit & compliance

Every payroll-relevant action β€” rate changes, role changes, time-clock edits, manual commission adjustments β€” is logged with the actor and a before/after diff. The log is append-only and exportable for audits.

Warning

Katura calculates and helps you remit US payroll taxes, but final filing responsibility rests with you (or your accountant). For multi-state operations, talk to a payroll-tax professional before your first run.

Getting started

  1. Add your team members
  2. Configure roles & permissions
  3. Set up payroll (entity, bank, tax IDs)
  4. Define your commission rules
  5. Turn on time tracking if you have hourly staff
  6. Set PTO accrual rates
  7. Onboard contractors and collect W-9s
